
Retired Supreme Court judge Justice Nasiru Sulemana Gbadegbe has sadly passed away at the age of 74, following a brief illness. He died on Saturday, April 5, 2025.
Justice Gbadegbe, before his demise, had an impressive judicial career that spanned over three decades, earning him deep respect for his integrity, legal expertise, and steadfast commitment to ethical principles.
He served at the Supreme Court from 2009 until his retirement in December 2020, having reached the mandatory retirement age of 70.
Before joining the Supreme Court, he was a member of the Court of Appeals from 1999 to 2009.
His judicial journey began in 1989 when he was appointed as a High Court judge, where he quickly established himself as a principled and diligent adjudicator.
A pivotal moment in his career was his role as one of the nine justices on the panel that oversaw Ghana’s landmark presidential election petition in 2012/2013, a case that tested the strength and integrity of the country’s democratic institutions.
Known among his peers as a “stickler for procedure”, Justice Gbadegbe was revered for his thorough application of the law and his unwavering respect for due process.
His judicial philosophy emphasised fairness, and he consistently advocated for the rule of law throughout his career.
During his retirement, the then Chief Justice Anin Yeboah described the retired Supreme Court judge, Justice Nasiru Sulemana Gbadegbe, as an asset and an unquenchable fire in the justice delivery system.
“His service to the country has been long and committed. He has brought a fire that cannot be quenched. What we can do is to also play our part in the justice delivery system.
“We wish you every happiness and blessing as you continue your journey because you deserve no less than that,” Justice Anin Yeboah said to his peer, who retired after 11 years on the Supreme Court bench.
