President John Mahama has called for an urgent meeting with key stakeholders in Ghana’s energy sector to address the growing threat of power shortages.
John Abdulai Jinapor, Member of Parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu and former Deputy Minister of Energy, revealed that the Chief of Staff has been directed to convene the meeting on January 8, 2025, at 10 a.m.
The meeting will bring together representatives from power generation companies, including GRIDCo, WAPCo, VRA, GNPC, BOST, and others, to discuss strategies for stabilizing the country’s power supply to prevent blackouts, known locally as “dumsor.”
Jinapor explained that the urgent action was prompted by the previous administration’s failure to secure adequate fuel for power generation.
He shared that several technical solutions are being considered to address the fuel shortages.
Regarding fuel stocks, he noted that AKSA’s fuel reserves can only sustain operations for five hours, while KTPP’s reserves will last one and a half days.
Cenpower has enough stock to continue running for about 21 days.
However, the Asogli plant is completely out of fuel, which further compounds the crisis.
