The Minority Caucus in Parliament has issued a stern warning to President John Dramani Mahama, calling for immediate action to address post-election lawlessness and violence.

They have vowed to withhold cooperation on government business unless decisive steps are taken to restore order.

At a press conference held on Monday, January 20, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Weija Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, criticised the president and the Election Security Taskforce for failing to enforce law and order amid rising tensions following the recent elections.

“To President Mahama, we call on you to take immediate steps to call your party thugs to order. You cannot pretend to be unaware of the lawlessness and violence in this country,” said Mr. Shaib.

He also directed an appeal to the Ghana Police Service, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and the Election Security Taskforce, urging them to act decisively.

“We also call on the Ghana Police Service, the IGP, and the Election Security Taskforce to rise to the occasion and enforce law and order without hesitation,” he added.

Mr. Shaib highlighted specific incidents of violence, including disruptions in the collation process for the Ablekuma North constituency parliamentary election.

He expressed concern over the safety of Electoral Commission (EC) officials and called for their protection.

“The EC officials and all the stakeholders in this electoral process must be protected. They are Ghanaians just like us,” he emphasised.

In a direct message to the President, the Minority Caucus warned of potential repercussions if their demands are not met.

“We hereby serve notice that should the President, who is the Commander-in-Chief, fail to take steps to protect ordinary citizens, we, the Minority Caucus, shall protest through lawful means and withdraw our cooperation in Parliament,” Mr. Shaib declared.
