Members of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC) began an industrial action today, November 18, 2024.

The nationwide strike is aimed at protesting against the government’s delay in finalising and implementing the Conditions of Service agreements for members within the Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana Library Authority (GhLA), Museums and Monuments Board, public technical universities, and public universities.

According to TEWU, negotiations for these service conditions have dragged on for several years without resolution.

Meanwhile, the National Labour Commission (NLC) is expected to meet with the leadership of TEWU-TUC and relevant stakeholders on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, on their demands.

The outcome of the meeting will determine if the union will call off the strike or not.

Earlier, the union, in a statement, expressed its disappointment over government agencies’ inability to conclude the process despite years of review negotiations.

It also stated that many of its members had anticipated a conclusion yet faced ongoing delays and bureaucratic setbacks for the past four years.

As the new academic year progresses, TEWU highlighted that its members, particularly those involved in admission processes for first-year students, are operating under increasingly uncertain service conditions.

Due to that, the union warned that members have become impatient.

TEWU further emphasised the importance of a timely response from authorities to prevent unnecessary disruptions in the education sector.
