The indefinite suspension of Ghana’s Parliament has sent shockwaves across the nation, leaving critical public business in limbo.

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, announced the decision on October 22, citing a lack of quorum.

This has sparked concerns about the potential impact on governance and development.

The suspension’s timing has disrupted several key issues that need parliament’s attention before the end of the current session ahead of the December 7 polls.

These include:

  1. 2025 First Quarter Budget Approval: The budget’s uncertainty may disrupt government programmes and services.
  2. L.I revoking Mining in Forest Reserves
  3.  Approval of $250 million Ghana Financial Stability Fund
  4. Approval of $250 million Ghana Energy Sector Loan
  5. Approval of $350 million worth of tax waivers
  6. Approval of 2 Supreme Court nominees.

The suspension follows a contentious period in Parliament during which the speaker declared four parliamentary seats vacant due to the affected legislators’ decision to cross carpet ahead of the upcoming elections.

Speaker Bagbin declared the four parliamentary seats vacant on October 17, reducing the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) numbers and favouring the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

As the suspension continues, the fate of these critical public businesses remains uncertain, sparking worries about the potential consequences for Ghana’s economy and governance.
