New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has slammed the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK), Sir Keir Starmer, over his recent comment on reparations for slavery.

The UK Prime Minister is reported to have rejected calls for reparations for slavery, urging countries affected by slavery not to focus on the past.

According to news.sky.com, Sir Starmer said that although slavery was completely wrong, the calls for reparations lead to endless discussions about the past.

“I’ve talked to a lot of our Commonwealth colleagues in the Commonwealth family and they’re facing real challenges on things like climate in the here and now.

“And in all the conversations I’ve had with them, what they’re most interested in is can we help them working with international institutions, financial institutions on the sorts of packages they need right now in relation to the challenges they’re facing right now,” he is quoted to have said to reporters on the plane to a Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHGM) in Samoa.

The Prime Minister added, “That’s where I’m going to put my focus rather than what will end up being very long, endless discussions about reparations on the past.”

Reacting to this in a post shared on X on October 24, 2024, Gabby expressed his displeasure about Sir Starmer’s comments.

He described the Prime Minister’s comments as shameful for a leader of a country which benefited immensely from slavery.

“A disgraceful dismissive attitude from the leader of an island nation that best benefited from the crime of slavery,” Gabby wrote.
