Kwame Adjei, a 24-year-old welder from Jasikan in the Oti Region, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to robbery.
The complainant, Kofi Azorlenyo, a 28-year-old farmer and part-time Okada rider from Dai-Konda, Togo, was hired by Adjei on June 22, 2024, to transport him to Kadjebi.
Despite the rain, Adjei insisted they continue their journey.
As they reached a secluded area at Bogos Junction on the Kadjebi-Nkwanta Highway, Adjei threw powdered pepper into Azorlenyo’s face, blinding him and forcing him to stop abruptly.
Azorlenyo quickly locked the bike using a remote controller and fled to safety.
Adjei managed to steal the motorbike but was later tracked down in Kadjebi, where he was arrested with the stolen bike’s key in his possession. An identification parade confirmed Adjei as the culprit.
During the investigation, Adjei admitted to the crime and was charged with robbery under section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act 1960 (Act 29).
The trial judge, Michael Jackson Abbey of the Jasikan Circuit Court sentenced Adjei based on his guilty plea.
