The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has seized more than 700 fake electric metres at Dabala in the Volta Region.

The officers intercepted the consignment during an inspection of a bus from Aflao headed to Accra on August 29, 2023.

According to Customs, the fake metres were hidden in the luggage compartment of the bus.

Upon, questioning, none of the passengers claimed ownership of the metres so they impounded the bus.

According to the General Manager of the Electricity Company of Ghana(ECG)  in the Volta Region, Christina Jatoe-Kaleo, it is illegal for individuals to import metres into the country.

She said only ECG, NEDCO, and the Ministry of Energy have the mandate to import metres.

The company had previously said fake meters were causing serious financial losses to the state because the fake meters were allowing people to use electricity without paying a dime to the company.

In March 2023, ECG embarked on an exercise to replace fake meters in some parts of the Eastern Region. They arrested some of the criminals behind the distribution of the fake meters.

On August 1, the police arrested two persons for posing as ECG workers and selling fake metres in Tarkwa.

The suspects were charged with false pretense, among other charges.
