Around 20 to 30 minutes later, a man with a gun entered the Lai Lai Ballroom in nearby Alhambra. Police believe the two events are connected.

People wrestled the weapon away from the attacker before he made a break for it.

‘He intended to kill more people,’  Mr Luna said in a news conference on Sunday night. ‘They saved lives. This could’ve been much worse.’

A SWAT team and police surrounded the white van in a car park in Torrance, before a standoff ensued.

After police entered the van, the situation appeared to de-escalate, with officers lowering their weapons and then withdrawing from the area immediately around the vehicle.

Just a few minutes later, police entered another white van parked closeby, and it a body was reportedly found slumped in the vehicle.

Police earlier released a photo of the suspect wearing a black leather jacket, black knit beanie, and glasses, but withheld his name.

The SWAT operation on the first white van wrapped up around 11pm (GMT).
