Four men have allegedly hijacked and stolen a fuel tanker that was transporting 54,000 litres of petrol in the Eastern Region.

According to the tanker driver, Isaac Abban, the suspects included one man dressed in a police uniform, accompanied by two plainclothes men.

Narrating the incident, he said the tanker with registration number GT-8109- 19 fully loaded with 54,000 litres of petrol was from Accra towards Kumasi direction when he was stopped by the suspect in police uniform at about 9:00 pm Thursday, January 12, 2023, on the Okanta stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway.

He, however, could not stop abruptly because he was descending.

The alleged police officer and the two other men pursued the vehicle with a taxi and arrested the driver and the mate.

They forcibly took away the key to the vehicle and sent them to a house along the stretch under guard instead of the  Amasaman police station where they initially assured.

Abban added that the suspects seized their(victims’) mobile phones and left the plainclothes men under the guise of protecting the tanker.

He said he and his mate were released by the alleged Police officer on Friday morning around 5:30 am.

However, the tanker was nowhere to be found after their release. This left them stranded. Meanwhile, they have reported the issue to the Teacher Mante Police.

The Ayensuano District Police Commander and his men have visited the scene and an investigation has started.
