For the third consecutive time, the government has exceeded its Treasury bill (T-bill) target, surpassing it by GHS 2.5 billion. The latest auction results from the Bank of Ghana reveal that while the government aimed to raise GHS 6.3 billion, it received bids totaling GHS 8.8 billion. This led to an oversubscription of 39.14 percent in the money market. This is according to the 2024 United Nations report on Unpacking Africa’s Debt. The government recorded anther impressive 39% oversubscription of treasury bills sale as demand for the short-term instruments grew. This however came at the expense of mounting interest rates which will increase interest payments. According to auction results by the Bank of Ghana, the government got GH¢8.890 billion from the total bids tendered by the investors largely banks but accepted GH¢8.839 billion. The target for the auction was GH¢6.353 billion. About GH¢5.6 billion came from the 91-day bill, representing 63.9% of the total bids. The government however accepted GH¢5.648 billion of the bids. South Africa’s police have launched a manhunt for an alleged “kingpin”, who is accused of controlling operations at an abandoned gold mine where 78 corpses were discovered last week.
