The Member of Parliament (MP) for Suhum, Kwadjo Asante, has decided to contest as an independent candidate in the 2024 elections.
This comes after he lost in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries.
Mr Asante, popularly known as Boafo lost his candidacy to Frank Asiedu Bekoe.
Addressing a gathering of supporters after a health walk in Suhum, on Sunday, September 1, the first-term MP announced his decision to break ranks with the NPP, ending months of speculation.
He said this was in response to the numerous calls from his constituents to continue his developmental work in the area.
He is not the only NPP politician to go solo.
In August 2024, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West, Cynthia Mamle Morrison, also announced her intention to contest the 2024 parliamentary elections as an independent candidate.
Her announcement came after she lost the NPP parliamentary primary to Christopher Arthur.
She declared her candidacy to her constituents, stating, “God willing, I would contest the parliamentary election as an independent candidate… It is not about the NDC, and it is not about the NPP. It is about the development of Agona.”
She emphasised her commitment to the constituency’s development, adding, “I don’t care whether you vote for former President John Dramani Mahama or Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. But the most important thing is for you to vote massively for Cynthia Morrison so I can come and complete the work I started”.
