Dr. Amoako Baah, a political scientist and member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has revealed that Ghanaians should expect the formation of the New Patriotic Front (NPF), a new political entity expected to emerge from the NPP.
Speaking in an interview, Dr. Baah emphasised that the creation of this new party is crucial due to perceived failures within the current party leadership.
“We want to fix the party, but those involved in the wrongdoing are the ones in charge. Do you think they will willingly give you a chance to throw them out? No, they won’t leave the party for them and form a new one. The shortest way around this thing is to form a new party,” he disclosed.
Reflecting on statements from some NPP leaders attributing the party’s defeat in the December 2024 elections to having chosen Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as their candidate, Dr. Baah firmly disagreed and instead pointed fingers at the party’s leadership, notably former President Akufo-Addo, for the significant electoral loss.
“It should be put on his head. He became very unpopular. He became arrogant,” he said.
He criticised the party chairman for permitting the former president to act unchecked and even intimidate party members, particularly MPs.
“If I was the chairman, I would have thrown him out of the party. Because no president should be given any power to do such a thing. Campaign against your own party members, no. Does the party belong to him?” he questioned.
Dr. Baah advocates that staunch supporters of the NPP should join the New Patriotic Front to drive change from the grassroots level.
“All NPP supporters should join the new party that is coming up, New Patriotic Front. When it comes out, join. That will be the real party. The old one should be left for the corrupt leaders,” the Political Scientist said.
He also cited issues surrounding the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as indicative of the NPP’s failing leadership.
“The old party is incompetent and corrupt. Look at what is happening in ECG,” he cited.
Citing problems ranging from erratic power supply to procurement scandals, including the incident of about 1,300 “missing” containers belonging to the ECG, he expressed grave concerns.
Moreover, he accused the Nana Akufo-Addo administration of printing new cedi notes to create temporary fiscal space for paying off government debts, a move he argues has severely harmed the economy.
“They print more notes so they can have a little room to pay the creditors of the government, and in so doing destroyed the economy of the country. They printed the money in big volumes and are now hiding it. This has set the country back for a long time. If the country doesn’t get a person to step in with emergency powers, then we are doomed,” he warned in an interview on TV3.
Dr. Baah believes that Ghanaians will recognise the New Patriotic Front as the authentic successor to the NPP once they see who comprises its ranks.
