The Ghana Police Service has enforced a strict prohibition on the movement of personnel and their families to Bawku and its surroundings.
This new directive follows the tragic incident that led to the death of two police officers at Poyamirea, located near Binduri in the Upper East Region.
In a wireless message signed by J.W. Darison, the Assistant Commissioner of Police for the Upper East Region, all commanders across divisions, districts, and units were directed to cease any officer movement to the area immediately.
The memo explicitly stated, “Ban on movement of personnel to Bawku,” adding that the decision follows “a dangerous development in Bawku and its environs”.
It further clarified that both residents and nonresidents, along with their families in Binduri and Pusiga, are not to be relocated to the area.
The safety of personnel was highlighted, urging those already engaged in operations in these areas to don proper personal protective equipment and ensure they have armoured escorts.
This directive comes right on the heels of heightened tensions in Bawku.
Just days earlier, on April 10, reports emerged of unidentified youth vandalising and partially setting ablaze the residence of Bawku Central MP and Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga.
Security sources indicate that the military has since been deployed in the region to prevent further unrest.
This situation stems from a prolonged chieftaincy conflict in the area.
In response to the Binduri attack, the Ghana Police Service has initiated a comprehensive manhunt for the individuals behind this violence.
ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the Director of Public Affairs, issued a statement reassuring the public of the police’s determination to bring those responsible to justice.
“The Ghana Police Service is on a manhunt to identify and arrest robbers who shot two policemen today, 13th April 2025, at Poyamirea, at the outskirts of Binduri,” she stated.
