The Auditor-General, Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, has commenced a sweeping nationwide audit of the government payroll system.
This is aimed at ensuring transparency, accuracy, and accountability in the management of public funds.
The exercise targets all entities on the Controller and Accountant-General’s payroll, including Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), and organizations.
This audit will cover payroll records for the period from January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2024.
A critical component of the exercise is a full headcount of all individuals receiving salaries from the government to verify their employment status and eliminate any irregularities or ghost names from the system.
In an official statement, the Office of the Auditor-General urged all affected institutions to fully cooperate with audit teams by granting them unrestricted access to all relevant documents and records, both physical and electronic.
“The Office of the Auditor-General calls on all institutions to provide unhindered access to books, returns, and other documents, including computerized and electronic records, to ensure the audit is completed smoothly and on schedule,” the statement emphasized.
This nationwide audit forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen public financial management and ensure that every cedi spent from the national purse is backed by accountability and value for money.
