Doctors at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi have suspended all surgical procedures due to an ongoing water shortage that has affected the facility since last week.
The decision, made by the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA), was announced in a memo dated March 25, 2025, highlighting the critical impact on patient safety and care.
The memo stated that the hospital’s Orthopaedic and Emergency Directorate had decided to temporarily stop admitting new patients until the water supply is restored.
Water, an essential resource for hygiene, surgeries, and patient care, is currently in very limited supply, severely disrupting hospital operations.
Despite attempts to manage the situation, the lack of water has reached a critical point, compromising the quality of healthcare services.
Dr. Michael Leat, Chairman of KADA, apologised for the inconvenience caused by the suspension and assured that the hospital would continue to care for existing patients, focusing on safety and hygiene.
KATH management explained that the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) had not yet restored the water supply since last week’s service disruption.
The hospital relies on alternative water sources, which have proven inadequate for daily operations. The hospital continues to work closely with the GWCL to resolve the issue.
