The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has dismissed accusations that he is treating Members of Parliament (MPs) like students, following his decision to suspend four MPs due to misconduct during the vetting of some ministerial nominees, on Thursday, January 30, 2025.
Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, Bagbin emphasised the importance of maintaining discipline within Parliament.
He rejected claims that his actions resembled those of a headmaster and pointed out the necessity of a structured environment in Parliament.
“Some members of the House have referred to me as a headmaster, treating Honourable Members like students. I reject that assertion. Where there are students, there must be a headmaster. If you don’t have a headmaster, you know what is going to happen to the school,” he remarked.
The Speaker also reminded MPs of the high expectations placed upon them, urging them to uphold decorum.
“To whom much is given, much is expected. You are not called Honourable for nothing. They expect so much from you. And don’t forget that there is life after Parliament,” he stated.
Alban Bagbin had earlier lifted the suspension of four MPs who were suspended for unparliamentary conducts, following heated altercations during the vetting session.
The suspended MPs were Frank Annoh-Dompreh (NPP, Nsawam-Adoagyiri), Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor (NDC, South Dayi), Alhassan Tampuli (NPP, Gushegu), and Jerry Ahmed Shaib (NPP, Weija-Gbawe).
