The Dome Kwabenya parliamentary seat has flipped to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as Faustina Elikplim Akurugu emerges victorious in a closely contested race.
The Electoral Officer at the Dome Kwabenya Collation Centre officially declared Akurugu the winner after she secured 51,634 votes, narrowly defeating the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Mike Oquaye Jr., who garnered 50,477 votes.
This marks a significant shift in the constituency, which Sarah Adwoa Safo of the NPP previously held.
The election process in Dome Kwabenya was not without tension.
Supporters of both parties clashed on multiple occasions, each accusing the other of attempting to manipulate the electoral process.
Despite these challenges, the voting and collation processes concluded without major disruptions.
Following the announcement of her victory, scenes of jubilation erupted at the collation centre.
Faustina Akurugu’s team celebrated with cheers while an enthusiastic crowd outside greeted the news with thunderous applause and excitement, marking a historic moment for the NDC in the constituency.
Akurugu’s win underscores a notable shift in voter sentiment in Dome Kwabenya and adds to the evolving dynamics of Ghana’s parliamentary landscape.
