The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has officially withdrawn from the December 7 presidential elections following the disqualification of Philip Appiah Kubi, also known as Roman Fada, as the party’s new presidential candidate.
Roman Fada was announced as the replacement for the late Akua Donkor, the party’s founder and presidential candidate, who passed away on October 28.
Background of the Controversy
The Electoral Commission detected errors and illegalities on Roman Fada’s nomination forms, leading to his disqualification.
This development comes after the party’s National Organiser, Richard Botchway, announced the party’s withdrawal from the race in honour of Akua Donkor.
However, the General Secretary, George Afful, had earlier submitted Roman Fada’s nomination forms to the Electoral Commission.
Implications of the Withdrawal
With the GFP no longer participating in the presidential elections, votes cast for Akua Donkor will be annulled, according to the Electoral Commission Chair, Jean Mensa.
This decision may impact the overall outcome of the elections.
Previous Attempts and Legacy
Akua Donkor founded the GFP in 2011 and had previously contested in parliamentary elections in 2004 and 2008.
Her party’s withdrawal marks the end of its presidential ambitions for the 2024 elections.
